WHAT IS BIODIESEL?
Biodiesel is a renewable
fuel produced from vegetable oils such
as soybean oil, rape seed and sunflower as well as from animal fats
through a simple transesterification process. This renewable source is
as efficient as petroleum diesel in powering unmodified diesel engine.
Biodiesel offers
significant environmental benefits in terms of reduced emmissions,
greater energy independence and a positive impact on agriculture.
Individual Governments and the European Comission have adopted
policies to strongly support the Biodiesel industry. An increased use
of biodiesel represents an important step to meet the emission
reduction target, as agreed under the Kyoto agreement to limit global
warming impacts.
This will,
in turn,
result in an
increase of
biodiesel
use.
Increased
biodiesel use
will help
reduce our dependence
on foreign oil, reduce our balance of trade, improve our
environment and provide jobs and
economic development in the US
Biodiesel
can be mixed with petroleum diesel in
any ratio. Pure biodiesel
has high cetane, a high flash point
and has greater lubricity than petroleun diesel, which reduces engine
wear. |
